GRVL& ME

GRVL is a project aiming to share the routes I ride through the KZN Midlands and make them easily accessible for other riders.

I am Bas Rennings, originally from The Netherlands but living in South Africa since 2007. I love to ride my bike.

While there are world class mountain bike trails around in Karkloof and Howick I was looking for the feeling I used to have on my road bike. The feeling of pedalling away kilometres enjoying the scenery while my mind wonders.

Why not ride on the road? The roads in KZN are not ideal for the “wandering around” approach, so a couple of years ago I put some gravel tyres on my road bike and set out, onto the gravel. It was love at first sight. It was love at first sight, and despite the fact that thin gravel tires on a road bike don’t provide a lot of comfort,I felt the feeling.

And since than I ride gravel most of the time.

I will keep riding and exploring and I hope to see you out on a bike in the Midlands. Want to know more please contact me via bas@grvl.co.za or via 072 459 3252.

Bushwillow

The Shaw family have been on this farm since 1852. The Karkloof range is one of the largest privately owned indigenous forests. It has been the pride and joy of all the five generations who’ve lived here. Hikers, birders and lovers of flora and fauna, have over the years enjoyed disappearing among the “giants” for a day, far from the bustle of everyday life.
