A short, relatively easy, ride trough the heart of the Karkloof area and over the 3km long kyberpass. The Barn Owl Café and Terbodore are great places to start this ride, and provide the opportunity for a treat afterwards.
At the 4 way crossing turn left onto the D293.
Turn left. This is the start of Kyberpass a 3 km climb with some steep sections
A short very steep climb....For when you started at Barn owl or Terbodore this is the last steep climb.
This road used to be open for the public but crosses since a couple of years Tillietudlem, a private nature reserve. Please inform the manager beforehand so he can make sure you can leave the reserve via an unlocked gate.
When you come out of the gate of Tillietudlem nature reserve you will continue on the tar road towards Boston. This road is mainly down hill which makes it quick and easy.
Turn left on to Gravel
Just a couple of hundred metres after Thumble Downs Cafe you turn left towards Karkloof. From here you leave the tar and enter the Gravel road.
You can extend the route here
If you are keen to ride a bit longer you can turn right here. You will come out on the Tar road opposite the Karkloof Country club. Turn left and after a couple of kilometres turn left again towards Curry's post road. You will pick up the route again a bit further down this gravel road.
Curry’s Post and Karkloof area
Curry's post's tar road forms 10 km of this loop, an easy and fast section as it is mainly downhill. The traffic on the road is not too bad so it is enjoyable and relaxing.
Entering the Gravel
Just after Tumblesdowns café, the route takes a left turn onto the gravel road towards Karkloof. Coming from the Curry’s post road, this stretch of Gravel is predominantly downhill, which allows you to enjoy the Farmlands and the view of the Karkloof nature reserve.
After turning left at the 4-way crossing, you will continue trough pristine midlands farmland. It’s never completely flat, but the hills are relatively short, and you will be rewarded with breath-taking views of the Karkoof Nature Reserve along the way.
Kyberpass and Elliot's neck
The Kyberpass is an almost 3km long climb, which has some steep sections. Remember to pace yourself and enjoy the magnificent views. There is a little dam at the summit where you can take a breather.
Once you reach the top of Kyberpass, the hard work is over except for Elliot's neck. This short but very steep climb will hurt your legs as a final test, but afterwards you can relax and ride downhill, with the option to get a nice cup of coffee at Terbodore.
After Eliot’s neck, you will arrive at the Curry’s post road, and take a left turn onto it. Shortly after the turn you will find Terbodore on your right hand side and a couple of km’s further, you will pass The Barn Owl Café.
If you want to do some more you can turn right towards Karkloof country club, turn left onto the Karkloof road and after a couple of kilometers left again to pick up the rout again. This will add another 4-5 km to the loop.
